The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology

National Register credentialed psychologists meet stringent requirements for education, internship, and experience as health care professionals, including exacting national standards for doctoral education and 3000 hours of supervised training experience.

"A Health Service Provider in Psychology is defined as a psychologist, certified/licensed at the independent practice level in his/her state, who is duly trained and experienced in the delivery of direct, preventative, assessment and therapeutic intervention services to individuals whose growth, adjustment, or functioning is actually impaired or is demonstrably at high risk of impairment."

Physicians and patients want assurance that referrals are made to qualified specialists. National Register psychologists are recognized as primary healthcare professionals and work with other professionals to prevent and manage chronic and acute illnesses and to reduce the burden of disease, nationally and globally.

The National Register, established in 1974, is one of the largest credentialing organizations for psychologists. It is the only source of credentials verification for psychologists that is approved by the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) and offers access to 14,000 psychologists whose health-care credentials exceed basic licensure requirements.

Psychologists credentialed by the National Register are appropriately qualified to address a wide variety of health care issues, within their areas of training and experience, that include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Chronic disorders and terminal illness
  • Compliance with medical treatment regimen
  • Family and couples' reactions and dysfunctions related to medical condition
  • Psychiatric disorders (depression, anxiety, others) related to medical illness
  • Stress and pain management
  • Smoking cessation and weight loss
  • Adjustment of older adults
  • Substance use disorders (abuse, addiction)
